European debt woes rattle travel firms
Local travel firms are keeping a close watch on what is happening in a crisis-hit Europe with concerns that their huge inbound market may be affected in the coming time though arrivals from Europe have yet to decline. For most travel firms providing international tourism services, Europe is always a top market due to a large number of tourists and their high spending. According to statistics of HCMC-based firms, European tourist arrivals have increased in the early months of this year.

Japanese woman makes second home in Hoi An
Hirukawa Yuki decided to give up the fast-paced life in Tokyo to open a souvenir shop in laid-back Hoi An 13 months ago. She says she hasn’t regretted the decision for a moment. And she is not alone – she joined a community of at least 20 Japanese expats in the ancient coastal town, which is recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Yuki, who graduated from Tokyo-based Wako University in 2006, said she was disillusioned with the frenetic pace of life, and her job as an advertising executive in the Japanese capital.

Tourist team cross VN by jeep
A squad of 36 tourists from the US and Australia will join a Trans-Viet Nam adventure by way of 13 vintage jeeps from April 24 to May 3. A source from Hoi An City-based Rose travel service agency told Viet Nam News that the 10-day tour will start from Ha Noi and wind through the provinces of Hoa Binh, Nghe An, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Hue and Hoi An city.

VN joins war on child sex tourism
Child sex tourism is not mentioned specifically in Vietnamese legislation, but there are fears that it could be growing as the nation makes big advances in attracting holiday makers – and as Vietnamese themselves move more and more around the country. Legal expert Le Thi Hoa from the Justice Ministry’s Department of Criminal and Administrative Laws said that existing regulations in the penal code, child care, protection and education, anti-human trafficking and prostitution seemed to cover this kind of crime.

Da Nang room prices shoot up ahead of fireworks fest
While it is still two months from this year’s international fireworks contest in the central city of Da Nang , many local hotels have raised room prices by 3-4 times the usual rates. Long, an employee of the 62-room Bien Vang hotel on Pham Van Dong Street, said a double deluxe room for a 10-person group is now available for VND2.2 million (US$105) a night, while it usually only costs VND480,000. “Prices of other hotels located far away from the fireworks display spot are already as high as VND1.8 million,” said Long.

Ngoc Viet – unique traditional show for tourists
The special show came out impressively at HCM City’s Non La (Conical Hat) on the evening of February 20. Hundreds of viewers, mainly artists and representatives of travel firms, were entertained with an amazing show entitled “Ngoc Viet” (Vietnamese Pearl) though the show is less than one hour long. Forty artists from the Phu Dong band, Golden Dragon Water Puppetry Theatre, HCM City Traditional Opera Theatre and Smile Puppetry Theatre devoted to the audience 12 impressive items, selected from various traditional art genres.
